Bab Rizq Jameel Egypt, an initiative of Abdul Latif Jameel Community Initiatives, announced that the first batch of Tuk Tuks, a small motorised tricycle, has been delivered to beneficiaries of transportation ownership program. This programme was started in May 2010 and has already created 118 job opportunities. The programme has proved to be popular as it is ideal for the Egyptian streets; due to its small size, the Tuk Tuk can carry 3 passengers and has the ability to move through the narrow roads far more easily than a regular car.

Through the program, Bab Rizq Jameel purchases the Tuk Tuks at wholesale price, then resells it to the beneficiary at the same price in interest-free installments ranging from 12 to 24 months. The beneficiary pays only for the administrative fees of the service.

Since inception, 12 people have joined the program. The Tuk Tuk can generate approximately 2,000 Egyptian pounds a month for its owner. Maaz Al-Faramawi, Executive Director of Bab Rizq Jameel Egypt, said that adding the new transportation vehicle to Bab Rizq Jameel’s activities is in line with their goal to launch new and creative job creation programs.
