On behalf of all at Abdul Latif Jameel, we extend our congratulations to Abhijit Banerjee and Esther Duflo, leading economists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), for receiving the 2019 Nobel Prize for Economics for their work in “their experimental approach to alleviating global poverty.”

Abhijit and Esther are co-founders of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at MIT, which has partnered with and been supported by Community Jameel since 2005, to tackle the root causes of poverty through evidence-based assessment, including issues related to health, education, youth employment, and financial inclusion.

Their work has “dramatically improved our ability to fight poverty in practice”, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the prize, said.

Prof. Duflo is only the second woman to win the prize since it began in 1969 and the youngest recipient of the prize at 46 years old.

Congratulations on this inspirational accomplishment!
